National Anthem not a pop song

It seems there was a problem with Christina Aguilera's rendition of our national anthem at the beginning of the Super Bowl: She got some words wrong.
I can understand a mistake like that. What confuses me is why the people that are responsible for selecting the singer of the National Anthem at events such as the Super Bowl can't choose someone that knows how to sing it the way it was composed to be sung.
The lady in question looked like she was in constant pain all the time she was singing it and made up her own melody during much of it.
To me, it was a disgrace. We are not talking about some pop song here.
